A  Musical Journey in Ireland

August 7 – 14, 2019

Subsequent Photographs and All Commentary by Debra Jan Bibel

Irish traditional folk music has long been a favorite, although limited to the old groups of Tommy Makem &The Clancy Brothers and The Chieftains growing up, later Planxty, the Bothy Band, and Altan, and more recently Lúnasa. The fiddler Martin Hayes and his guitar partner Dennis Cahill have lately attracted my attention; they have expanded to the progressive groups The Gloaming and also this year to the Martin Hayes Quartet. With positive reports by family about their own experiences in Ireland, I decided that it was time for my own musical journey at a good travel time. Of course, nearly every bar in Ireland would have often spontaneous musical gatherings. The great traditional Irish festivals, the fleadh, and ceili feile dance parties, are found everywhere in towns and villages, and the most popular are often in larger venues, such as the National Fleadh Cheoil. As I tend to avoid crowds, I was more interested in smaller but core festivals, preferably in a village. Discovering that the Martin Hayes Quartet would be performing at the Feakle Festival in County Clare in mid August 2019, I  took a week off to see them. Hayes typically comes to Berkeley, California, and the Freight & Salvage performance hall, but to hear him in his home territory before an audience of his students and peers would be special.

I include in this visual record my comments about transportation and lodging for interested travelers.
